I have guessed at the language of several books. Since I was doing keyword and subject searches, it is even possible that some books have absolutely nothing to do with gliding. If you see something that is misplaced, please let me know.
You will see that there are several different bibliographic formats. This is a result of the diverse number of sources used to produce this list. I do not intend to unify the style, in the interest of my time.
You might also see a few books with no authors, or other pieces of information missing. Not all databases were created correctly. If you recognize the title of the book and know who the author is, please let me know.
Some book entries which start off with a number which is called the Library of Congress (LC) catalogue number. They have the form XX-.....
ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is very useful for tracking books, as is the LC/LCCN (Library of Congress Catalogue Number) number.
If the books look like they are in no particular order, you are almost correct. The English books are in alphabetical order by author and the foreign language books are ordered as best I can. If I have made a mistake, please let me know.
If you see duplicate entries, please let me know. Some are deliberate, e.g. Soaring Pilot vs New Soaring Pilot by Welch. Other duplicate entries may simply indicate various editions.
Unfortunately, some of the sources did not supply the complete list of authors. e.g. New Soaring Pilot by Welch (and Welch and Irving)
Some of the entries are theses.
Some of the books come with short descriptions. If there is a book without a description which you have read, please submit a 1-2 line description. As of January 1996 I have started to list known book reviews of the books found in this FAQ. If you are aware of various book reviews not listed here, please send me the appropriate information.
Safety related books will be listed in the Safety FAQ.
The most common gliding magazines are associated with the various national organizations. These magazines will be listed in the main FAQ along with the national organization. The uncommon, low volume, or defunct magazines are listed here.
There seems to be some confusion over Wolf Hirth's name. Some of the entries are indicated as Wolfram Hirth and some people have told me it is wrong while others tell me that Wolf is a contraction of Wolfram.
The intent of this list is to list book titles, authors, year of publication, catalogue numbers, and little else. In other words, this list is simply to inform us what is out there. If the titles are of merit or interest, at least you have an idea where to start your searches.
In the interest of space, model glider books and hang gliding books have been eliminated. For those who are interested in such material, there is lots out there. Perhaps someone would want to take up the challenge. If such titles are found in the non-English language sections, please let me know so that I can delete them.
NO AUTHOR ETC is just a catch-all for those items not written by an individual. OSTIV publications are one partial exception to the category.
Many people have asked me why many of the books listed are so old. I don't really know. The bibliography is as detailed and up-to-date as what I find in various databases and submissions from various people.
Help is requested to complete the new section on Technical Soaring.

Magazine articles are not listed, but all of the flight test evaluation reports contain useful information. If you are aware of other appropriate entries, please let me know.
