Premiere Magazine featured the Top 100 Movie Moments of All Time. The Deer
Hunter made the list at #87 with the confrontation between Michael and
Nick in Saigon. In case you're curious, #1 was the "You broke my heart!"
scene in The Godfather Part II where Michael confronts Fredo.
I was sent this essay by
Frank Schalk, a film major at
UCSC. It is very interesting and probes a theory that many Robert De Niro,
The Deer
Hunter, or Taxi Driver fans have probably not thought too much
about. Click here to download the essay, in
Microsoft Word format. He's also interested in receiving some feedback,
so send him your comments if you can!
I received another essay from
Paul Kelley comparing the film to
Russian epics. Read it here and tell him what you
think.
Marky Billson also sent me an
essay with a great deal of information on the
city of Clairton, Pennsylvania, the setting for the film.
Jean Luc Cattacin from Paris
sent me his essay, From Hell to Heaven,
about the evolution of the character of Michael from a devil to a saint.
Interesting reading.
I was sent the following images by Corry Smith.
They are from the "Bicentennial History of Mingo Junction, Ohio", released in 1970 (click
here for a scan of the cover -- large file size). Here is a
view of Welsh's Bar which
should be recognizable as the bar from the film. The image confirms that the bar was
fully functional and open prior to the filming of the movie. Also, another image shows
Dugan's Pool Hall which is visible in the scene where Michael and Linda walk down the
street on the way to the market.
The following is a plot summary of the film The Deer Hunter, the
first paragraph written by
Leon Wolters.
Michael, Steven and Nick are young factory workers from Pennsylvania who
get drafted to fight in Vietnam. Before they go, Steven marries the
pregnant Angela and their wedding-party is also the men's farewell party.
After some time and many horrors the three friends fall in the hands of
the Vietcong and are brought to a prison camp in which they are forced to play
Russian roulette against each other. Michael makes it possible for them
to escape, but they soon get separated again.
If you have not yet seen this great cinematic masterpiece, you are highly
recommended to do so. Although the film will not be as "hard hitting" as
it was when it was originally released in 1978 (some of the Russian
roulette scenes were called the harshest moments in film history), it should
still be a great movie experience for you. Go out and rent it today!
Unfortunately, it seems that many smaller video rental stores do not carry
this film. Most of the larger chains, however, such as Blockbuster or
Hollywood Video, should have it in stock. If you
are unable to find it, it can be ordered from various mail
order video
retailers. It also appears occasionally on various cable television
stations in the United States.
The following are quotes from The Deer Hunter.
Michael: One shot. That's what
it's all about. One shot.
Michael: You see this? This is
this. This ain't somethin' else. This is this!
Michael: I feel a lot of
distance. I feel far away.
Stan: I'm gettin' more ass than a
toilet seat.
John: You ever take a drink of
beer, and piss at the same time?
Axel: Fuckin' A!
Axel: You're so full of shit you're
gonna float away!
Green Beret: Fuck it.
Julien Grinda: When a man says no
to champagne, he says no to life.
