Are You Out There
Dar Williams
End of Summer

Jen, goddess of htlm hooked me up with a tape that has Dar on it, and now I'm hooked... Nuff said.

Perhaps I am a miscreation,
No one knows the truth,
There is no future here.
And you're the DJ speaks to my insomnia
And laughs at all I have to fear,
Laughs at all I had to fear.
You always play the madmen poets,
Vinyl vision grungy bands,
You never know who's still awake,
You never know who understands and

Are you out there, can you hear this,
Jimmy Olson, Johnny Memphis
I was out here listening all the time,
And though the static walls surround me
You were out there, and you found me,
I was out here listening all the time.

Last night we drank in parking lots,
And why do we drink, I guess we do it cause.
And when I turned your station on,
You sounded more familiar than that party was,
You were more familiar than that party,
It's the first time I stayed up all night,
It's getting light, I hear the birds,
I'm driving home on empty streets,
I think I put my shirt on backwards,

Are you out there, can you hear this,
Jimmy Olson, Johnny Memphis
I was out here listening all the time,
And though the static walls surround me
You were out there, and you found me,
I was out here listening all the time.

What's the future, who will choose it,
Politics of love and music,
Underdogs who turn the table,
Indie verus major labels,
There's so much to see through,
Like our parents do more drugs than we do.

Corporate parents, corporate town,
I know every TV set that has them lit.
They preach that I should save the world
They pray that I won't do a better job of it,
Pray that I won't do a better job,
So tonight I turn your station on,
Just so I'd be understood,
Instead another voice said I was just too late and just no good.

Calling Olsen, calling Memphis,
I am calling, can you hear this?
I was out here listening all the time.
And I will write this down and then
I will not be alone again, yeah,
I was out here listening,
I was out here listening,
I am out here listening all the time.

If I Wrote You
Dar Williams
End Of Summer

I never thought you were the letter writing type,
So now I see the words you chose, the way you write.
So I started to write back about the trees in the snow,
And I saw a bird, couldn't say what it was
but I thought you'd know.
You always surprised me.

And if I wrote you,
If I wrote you,
You would know me,
And you would not write me again.

And when the spring came and flooded all the streams,
It's like how you got the night you told me all your dreams.
And when the barn roof sagged after an icy bout,
It's like how you shrugged when you knew
the truth was the only way out,
But not the only way,

And if I wrote you,
If I wrote you,
You would know me,
And you would not write me again.

We drew our arms around the bastard sons,
We never would drink to the chosen ones,
Well you know the way I left was not the way I'd planned,
But I thought the world needed love and a steady hand.
So I'm steady now.

And I'm so happy,
I had to tell you,
And I love you,>
And you will not write me again.
You will not write me again,
You will not write me again.

What Do You Hear In These Sounds
Dar Williams
End Of Summer

I don't go to therapy to find out if I'm a freak,
I go and I find the only answer every week.
And it's just me and all the memories to follow
Down any course that fits within a fifty minute hour,
And we fathom all the mysteries, explicit and inherent,
When I hit a rut, she says to try the other parent.
And she's so kind, I think she wants to tell me something,
But she knows that it's much better if I get it for myself,
so she says,

Oooh, aaaah,
What do you hear in these sounds?
And Oooh, aaah,
What do you hear in these sounds?

I say I hear a doubt, with the voice of true believing,
And the promise to stay, and the footsteps that are leaving,
And so she says, "Oh," I say, "what?" She says "Exactly,"
I say, "What, you think I'm angry? Does this mean you think I'm angry?"
She says, "Look, you come here every week
with jigsaw pieces of your past,
It's all on little soundbytes, and voices out of photographs,
And that's all your's, that's the guide, that's the map,
So tell me, where does the arrow point to,
who invented roses and

Ooh, aaah,
What do you hear in these sounds?
And Oooh, aaah,
What do you hear in these sounds?

And when I talk, I know what people think,
That it only makes you selfish and in love with your shrink,
But oh how I loved everybody else,
When I finally got to talk so much about myself,

And I wake up, and I ask myself what state I'm in,
And I say well I'm lucky cause I am like East Berlin,
I had this wall, and what I knew of the free world
Was that I could see their fireworks,
and I could hear their radio,
And I thought that if we met, I would only start confessing,
And they'd know that I was scared,
they would know that I was guessing,
But the wall came down, and there they stood before me,
With their stumbling and their mumbling
and their calling out, just like me,

And Ooooh, aaah,
The stories that nobody hears,
I collect these sounds in my ears,
And Oooooh, aaaah,
That's what I hear in these sounds.
And Oooh, aaah,
That's what I hear in these,
that's what I hear in these sounds.

Another Day In Paradise
Phil Collins
Hits

She calls out to the man on the street
"Sir, can you help me?
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me?"

He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there

Oh think twice, it's another day for
You and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it's just another day for you,
You and me in paradise

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been crying
She's got blisters on the soles of her feet
Can't walk but she's trying

Oh think twice...

Oh lord, is there nothing more anybody can do
Oh lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she's been there
Probably been moved on from every place
'Cos she didn't fit in there

Oh think twice...

Angel
Sarah McLachlan
Surfacing

This song is extremely beautiful. Sarah's voice, again, just touches your heart. This track can also be found on the soundtrack to City of Angels

Spend all your time waiting for that second chance
For the break that will make it OK
There's always some reason to feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction or a beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
Let me be empty and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the Angel far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you feel
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line, and everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting, you keep on building the lies
That make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference, escape one last time
It's easier to believe
In this sweet madness, oh this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees

In the arms of the Angel far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you feel
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

In the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

Farewell, With Love
Dee Caretensen
The Map

This song is a gorgeous song of a mother grieving over the loss of an infant/pregnancy.

If you'd been born in August
I'd have dressed you in white cotton
I'd have held you to my breast
And kissed you with sun

If you'd been born to listen
You'd have heard the sweetest music
'Cause I'd have whispered ever lullaby that mother's have sung

And had you become older I'd still have rocked you like a baby
And changed my voice to the stories I'd have read
And had you ever asked a question
I'd have answered you in earnest
And then left the hall light on beside your bed

If you'd been born in winter
Your cheeks would have warmed like roses
'Cause I'd have bundled you in goosedown
From your head to your toes
And the moment that you smiled
I'd have thought myself the first one
To understand what every mother knows

And had you known your father
You'd have been as proud of him as I am
You'd have wanted to be near him just as I do now
You might have wanted him to hold me
And console me
And if asked how I'm to live without you
Maybe he'd know how

When I'm Sixty Four
The Beatles
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a Valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.
If'd I'd been out til quarter to three
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

You'll be older, too,
And if you say the word,
I could stay with you.
I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday morning go for a ride,
Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

Every summer we can rent a cottage,
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera Chuck & Dave
Send me a postcard, drop me a line,
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me.
When I'm sixty-four.

Love Song for A Vampire
Annie Lennox
Soundtarck to Brahm Stocker's Dracula

This song is from the Soundtrack to Brahm Stocker's Dracula. I remember hearing it years ago, but I stumbled upon it on the net a few weeks ago and had to find it for myself... So I'm sharing it's lyrics with whoever stumbles upon this page, the melody is haunting.

come into these arms again
and lay your body down
the rhythm of this trembling heart
is beating like a drum

it beats for you
it bleeds for you
it knows not how it sounds
for it is the drum of drums
it is the song of songs

once I had the rarest rose
that ever deighned to bloom
cruel winter chilled the bud
and stole my flow'r too soon

oh loneliness
oh hopelessness
to search the ends of time
for there is in all the world
no greater love than mine

love oh love oh love oh love oh love oh love
still falls the rain
still falls the rain
love oh love etc.
still falls the rain
love oh love oh love etc.
be mine forever
be mine forever
love oh love oh love etc.

let me be the only one
to keep you from the cold
now the floor of heaven is laid
with stars of brightest gold

they shine for you
they shine for you
they burn for all to see

come into these arms again
and set this spirit free

If You Could Only See
Tonic
???

This is an old-ish song, but I love the acoustic version that they play on the radio at home.

if you could only see the way
she loves me
maybe you would understand
why I feel this way about our love
and what I must do

if you could only see how blue
her eyes can be
when she says

when she says she loves me

you've got your reasons
and you've got your lies
and you've got your manipulations
that cut me down to size

say you konw but you don't
you give me love
but you won't

if you could only see the way
she loves me
maybe you would understand
why I feel this way about our love
and what I must do

if you could only see how blue
her eyes can be
when she says
when she says she loves me

seemed a road less traveled
shows happiness unraveled
and you got to take a little time
to keep what you love
so what you wanna do

say you love but you don't
you give me love but you won't

if you could only see
the way she loves me
maybe you would understand
why I feel this way about our love
and what I must do

if you could only see how blue
her eyes can be
when she says
when she says she loves me

say you love but you don't
you give your love but you won't
but you won't
say you love but you stand
give your heart when you can

if you could only see the way
she loves me
maybe you would understand
why I feel this way about our love
and what I must do

if you could only see
how blue her eyes can be
when she says

when she says she loves me

Christmas Bells
John Gorka
Winter Solstice III

John's Voice can give me chills, and I found this song by searching for him on Yahoo... I love the Winter Solstice Cd's (Especially IV) so look into them.

I heard the bells on Christmas day
their old familiar carosl play
wild and sweet the words repeat
of peace on earth
goodwill to men
peace on earth
goodwill to men

I thought how
as the day had come
the bellfries of all Christendom
had rolled along the unbroken song
of peace on earth goodwill to men
peace on earth goodwill to men

and in dispair I bowed my head
ther is no peace on earth I said
for hate is strong and mocks this song
of peace on earth goodwill to men
peace on earth goodwill to men

then pealed the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor doth he sleep
the wrong shall fail
the right previal
with peace on earth goodwill to men
peace on earth goodwill to men

I heard the bells on Christmas day
their old familiar carols play
wild and sweet the words repeat
with peace on earth goodwill to men
peace on earth goodwill to men

Babylon
David Gray
???

I was watching VH1 while home for Fall Break and they played this video, and I instantly fell in love with David Gray... This CD is on the list of stuff to buy, just because of this song.

Friday night I'm going no where
all the lights are changing green to red
turning all the TV stations
situations running through my head

looking back throug time
you know it's clear that I've been blind
I've been a fool
to open up my heart to all that jealousy
that bitterness
that ridicule

Saturday I'm running wild
and all the lights are changing
red to green
moving through the crowd
I'm pushing chemicals
are rushing in my bloodstream

I only wish that you were here
you know I'm seeing it so clear
I've been afraid
to show you how I really feel
admit to some of those bad mistakes that I've made

well
if you want it
come and get it
for crying out loud
the love that I was
give you was
never in doubt

let go of your heart
let go of your head
and feel it now
let go of your heart
let go of you head
and feel it now

sunday all the lights of london
shine the sky is fading
red to blue
I'm kicking through the autumn leaves
and wondering where it is
you might be going to

then I'm turning back for home
you know I'm feeling so alone
I can't belive
I'm climbing on the stair
I turn around to see you smiling
there in front of me

well
if you want it
come and get it
for crying out loud
the love that I was
giving you was
never in doubt
let go of your heart
let go of your head
and feel it now
let go of you heart

Lullabye for an Anxious Child
Sting
???

Someone mentioned this in an article I read, and I had to find a copy of it, so I got resourceful, and tracked it down. As only Sting can do, it is both sweet and almost haunting in its beauty, which sounds melodramatic, but it's true. Find a copy and listen for yourself- listen for that tradmark bass thumping in the background.

hush child
let your mommy sleep
into the night until we rise
hush child
let me soothe the shining tears
that gather in your eyes

hush child
I won't leave I'll stay with you
to cross this Bridge of Sighs
hush child
I can't help the look
of accusation in your eyes
in your eyes

the world is broken and now
all in sorrow
wisemen hang their heads

hush child
let your mommy sleep
into the night until we rise
hush child
all the strength
I need to find
I'll find inside your eyes
In your eyes
